Gail has led Constant Contact since its early days with just an email marketing product and a handful of employees. Under her leadership, the company has grown to more than 1,300 employees in seven office locations, gone through a successful IPO, and now delivers a suite of online marketing tools to more than half a million small businesses and organizations.
Gail's genuine passion for helping small businesses succeed filters down to every member of the Constant Contact team. Constant Contact has "cracked the code" to helping small businesses use modern marketing tools. She's even written a book, Engagement Marketing: How Small Business Wins in a Socially Connected World. Along the way, she has worked with, coached, and talked with, literally thousands of small businesses and organizations.
"It's hugely satisfying to walk into a local shop and find out from the owner that they're a Constant Contact customer," says Gail. "Honestly, there are few things harder than running a small business, so knowing that we're helping them be better marketers and grow their customer base is very rewarding."
Over the years, Gail has been honored with numerous awards and recognitions for her work in technology and with small organizations. Some of those honors include the Boston Business Journal's Tech Luminary Lifetime Achievement Award, SCORE's Lou Campanelli Award, Ernst and Young's Entrepreneur of the Year, and the Boston Globe's Top 30 Innovators.
Serving on the Boards of the Massachusetts Technology Leadership Council, Blade, and SCORE, Gail holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from The University of Pennsylvania and an MBA from the Amos Tuck School at Dartmouth College.
A frequent speaker at industry events, Gail develops and tracks best practices in small business and nonprofit success, as well as entrepreneurship. Her 2013 TEDx talk, "Founders Can't Scale," delivered at TEDxBeaconStreet, offers a telling glimpse into Gail's management philosophy and personal drive.
Ellen has been at Constant Contact since September 2006 and during her time here she's developed a reputation for her business acumen, tech savvy, and positive energy. After leading the product strategy team to bring four new products to market, Ellen shifted her focus to customer operations in 2012, overseeing Constant Contact's award-winning customer support team and other organizations focused on delivering customer success.
"Knowing that we're helping to power the dreams and goals of small businesses and nonprofits really makes it fun to get up and get to work every day," says Ellen. "We have the best customers, and they're so appreciative of how we help them." She says she loves bumping into customers everywhereand we mean everywhere. "They are my neighbors and the people in my town, but I also met one when I was in France, where our tour guide happened to be a customer!"
Ellen says that small business owners are incredibly diverse, with unique challenges and different business approaches. But she does note some commonalities. "They tend to be very creative and nimble."
So is Ellen. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in finance from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and has more than 25 years of experience within the tech sector, but she also loves satisfying the right side of her brain by reading classic literature and movies. Her favorite movie, To Kill a Mockingbird, is, Ellen believes, one of the best screen adaptations of a novel.
Harpreet is a man as interesting as his name. He joined Constant Contact in July 2010 and oversees corporate strategy and development, analytics and Big Data, finance, accounting, and investor relations. Harp (as he's known around here) is a perfect fit for Constant Contact because he has a real passion for high-growth companies and enjoys the challenge of managing change.
Prior to joining Constant Contact, he served as CFO of TheLadders.com, and was EVP and CFO of VistaPrint Limited. He also served as CFO of GoldenSource Corporation and eGain Communications. While he's worked primarily for fleet-footed technology companies, Harp earned his stripes working for multinational conglomerate PepsiCo and Pepsi-Cola North America.
Harp grew up in Africa, India, and London before coming to the U.S. to attend the University of California at Berkeley, and later earned a Master of Arts in International Studies from Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies.
Harp is an enthusiastic runner, loves traveling, and for fun he enjoys spending time with his wife and two children. He's a big music fan and can be found at various Boston hot spots.
One of Constant Contact's resident visionaries, Joel is charged with identifying and pursuing growth areas related to emerging businesses. In this role he oversees the investigation of adjacent and new markets, while managing the expansion of Constant Contact's existing product portfolio. After earning a BS in electrical engineering from the University of Rochester, Joel served as CEO for a number of mobile communications companies, including Umber Systems and LiveWire Mobile.
Joel brings significant entrepreneurial expertise to Constant Contact, having founded and sold a number of successful startups. His forward-thinking approach and deep experience in the communications technology and mobile space also give him a unique perspective in identifying emerging markets.
What's fun about working at Constant Contact? Joel says it's the interaction with small business owners. "I love meeting with our customers, because by and large, they love what they're doing. Their energy is contagious. And those face-to-face interactions with customers really help inform our business strategy," he says.
He's a man of action both on the job and off, with a long list of hobbies that includes skiing, surfing, golf, and paddle tennis. As for rare moments of rest, Joel's favorite book is Atlas Shrugged and among his favorite movies are Field of Dreams, Shawshank Redemption, and The Sound of Music (perhaps a throwback to his upbringing on a farm in New York's Finger Lakes region?).
A member of the Constant Contact team since 2006, Chris has played a pivotal role in the company's growth and product expansion and now oversees the company's global sales and marketing strategy. His truly cross-functional experience, from leading Constant Contact's web strategy and conversion marketing teams, to launching its first business unit based on an event management tool, has prepared him well for his current role.
Behind the corporate background is a bit of a renaissance man. His early aspirations for an international career were forged during childhood summers spent at a cabin on the French Canadian border. A French major at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, he studied just outside of Paris in the late 80s, becoming fluent in the language and culture. So much so, that Chris says he began dreaming in French, and appreciating good wine and French movies. After earning his MBA from Northeastern University in Boston, he went on to fulfill his dreams of a career with international experiences when positions at IBM and Rational Software led him to Europe, the Middle East, and South Africa.
A frequent writer and speaker on small business success, he serves on the Board of Directors of the Massachusetts Innovation & Technology Exchange (MITX) and as a strategic advisor to technology companies WordStream and Backupify. Chris holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in French from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and an MBA from Northeastern University.
Chris has been settled in the Boston area for a while now, where he and his wife are raising their family and enjoying New England skiing. Chris says what gets him most excited about his work here at Constant Contact is that he's always just one step away from actual customers, an unusual dynamic for a company executive. "I know at least three businesses in my town that have flourished because I introduced them to Constant Contact. That's a really great feeling," says Chris. He is a big reader, counting The Great Gatsby and Catcher in the Rye among his favorites. As for favorite movies, Chris lists Field of Dreams, Star Wars, and The Big Blue (yeah, we haven't seen that one either—apparently it's a French film).
Bob joined Constant Contact in March 2007, bringing with him more than 15 years of executive leadership experience. Bob oversees all of Constant Contact's legal affairs, including corporate governance, public company matters, business development, compliance, human resources, and future corporate planning.
While he was a member of the corporate department of legal firm Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr (formerly Hale and Dorr), Bob has spent most of his career working in-house for technology companies. Among his positions prior to joining Constant Contact were SVP and general counsel at RSA Security Inc., and VP and general counsel at Med-i-Bank, Inc. and ON Technology Corporation. He also served as SVP and general counsel at The Pioneer Group, Inc.
He says, "It's great to work at a company that's so well known for providing a great service to our customers. There have been countless times when I've walked into a store or restaurant and, if I mention where I work, the folks in the store genuinely tell me how much they love Constant Contact."
A native of Rhode Island, Bob holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Rhode Island and a Juris Doctorate degree from Boston University School of Law. He has a lot of fun stories about Rhode Island, so feel free to ask him about the tiniest state in the union when you run into him. In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with family. As for favorite movies, Bob thinks Shawshank Redemption is a great one, and in particular, likes the line spoken by Andy Dufresne, "Get busy living or get busy dying."
Bob has played an essential role in Constant Contact's impressive growth. In the over five years that he's been with the company, the number of employees working here has tripled to more than 1,200 across six offices here in the U.S. and abroad. "My focus is making absolutely sure we hire well, and that we connect our people to our mission of helping small business succeed," he says.
Bob and his team also get creative in ensuring that Constant Contact is an innovative and fun place to work, from regular employee growth/career development opportunities and Innovation Jams, to employee Wow! Awards, a weekly "beer cart," and more.
While he's happily settled in the Boston area and enjoying all things New England, especially Cape Cod, his career has spanned the globe. For more than 20 years, he worked internationally, opening offices in Ireland, Russia, the Czech Republic, the U.K., and Puerto Rico while in executive leadership positions at Scala Business Solutions, The Pioneer Group, and Lotus Development (now Lotus Software). During that time, he also had the opportunity to live and work for four years in The Netherlands. His work took him back to the Boston area when he served as Vice President at social networking site Gather, Inc., and as Human Resources Director of the Weston Jesuit School of Theology.
What keeps him happy at Constant Contact? "I love being surrounded by really smart people who genuinely enjoy supporting small business success. And our leadership completely backs our efforts to make sure that Constant Contact continues to be a great place to work."
In his free time, Bob is an adventure junkie. Recent vacations found him hiking Machu Picchu and exploring the arts in Cuba, and he's also backpacked almost every National Park in the U.S. So don't expect to find Bob just sitting around!
